Charlotte, North Carolina — Basware, the global leader in Invoice Lifecycle Management (ILM), today announced new AI agent capabilities in its ILM platform, designed to transform invoice processing and further elevate accounts payable (AP) automation. This launch marks the future of intelligent finance becoming a reality.

“The near-term future of finance is near-perfect, touchless invoice processing,” said Jason Kurtz, CEO of Basware. “The future belongs to Agentic Finance, where AI entities will execute transactions on behalf of businesses, driving faster, smarter decisions and tangible business outcomes. This is the future Basware is creating, and we are preparing our customers for it. Our goal is to help customers achieve 100% automated, 100% compliant, and 100% protected invoice processing.”

The two new agents launched today will manage invoice disputes and payment inquiries, and help AP clerks resolve processing issues in real time, driving the journey toward AP autonomy.

The Dawn of Agentic Finance

Now is the time to embrace this change. Finance departments are under increasing pressure to explore how AI can drive efficiency, cost savings, and return on investment. According to a global survey conducted by FT Longitude on behalf of Basware, 61% of 200 finance leaders in the US, UK, France, and Germany said their organizations have deployed AI agents, but mostly in pilot phases, merely testing the technology's potential. Meanwhile, a quarter of respondents admitted they still do not fully understand how AI agents work in practice. However, the era of experimentation is over—business leaders expect tangible results.

With Basware, finance leaders can leverage an intelligent platform with embedded AI to drive end-to-end modern invoice management processes, delivering immediate ROI as well as long-term efficiency and growth.

From Automation to Autonomy

In November 2025, Basware launched InvoiceAI, an advanced solution built on its ILM platform that leverages generative AI, AI agents, natural language processing, and deep learning to optimize the entire process from invoice receipt to reconciliation. At the same time, Basware introduced two new AI agents designed to empower AP teams. These agents are not replacements for humans but act as digital teammates, assisting with critical tasks so human colleagues can focus on strategic activities:

  • AP Business Agent: Provides context-aware, real-time guidance to help take the best actions when processing invoices, streamlining processes and eliminating friction.
  • AP Data Agent: Allows users to query invoice data using natural language, such as “Show all invoices awaiting approval in Germany” or “Which suppliers offered early payment discounts this month?”, and delivers instant answers to drive optimal actions.

Kurtz added: “When AI agents handle repetitive questions from business users, AP teams are freed up to ask strategic questions that create real impact. That's how you move from processing transactions to driving strategy.”

Trust by Design

It sounds good in theory, but finance teams will only delegate work to AI with confidence if they are certain they can control AI permissions, that all AI operations are auditable and explainable, and that there is a single, governed path for AI/agent execution—rather than a multitude of isolated bots.

To this end, Basware's approach to agentic AI is built on the principle of “trust by design.” Kurtz said: “Autonomy without trust is just risk. Our platform is uniquely designed to ensure every AI decision is explainable, auditable, and governed by the same control mechanisms finance teams already rely on. This way, we help customers safely delegate more work to AI while maintaining 100% compliance and 100% protection.”

On the Basware platform, every AI agent action runs through a single, governed execution path within the ILM platform, enforced by a central policy engine and a series of autonomy gates. These gates apply each customer's business rules, compliance requirements, and risk thresholds before any action is taken. As a result, AI can take on more work while finance teams retain full visibility, control, and a complete audit trail of every autonomous decision.

Basware will continue to deliver more AI innovations in the future, with planned agents that go beyond surfacing insights to help prioritize actions, automate solutions, and connect information across systems to support faster, smarter decisions at scale. Planned agent releases include:

  • Supplier Agent: Will support managing invoice disputes and payment inquiries. This agent will automatically call suppliers, explain disputes, and summarize call content and next steps, accelerating issue resolution.
  • AP Pro Agent: Will leverage generative AI to help AP clerks resolve processing issues in real time through simple natural language queries, reducing delays and manual work.

Billerud, a paper and packaging materials manufacturer, is an early adopter of Basware InvoiceAI and has already experienced the benefits of the solution.

“From day one, we felt the expected value of the project,” said Jesper Persson, Business Developer at Billerud. “Invoice quality has improved significantly, and the AI evolves every day. The efficiency gains we achieve translate directly into substantial cost savings, delivering a rapid return on investment within just a few months.”

Crossing the AI Delegation Gap

Basware will continue to invest in AI innovation on its ILM platform and launch new features that leverage the latest technologies to help customers cross the AI delegation gap and unlock the true business value of the technology. These features will roll out through 2026.

Kurtz concluded: “At Basware, AI is not a buzzword or an add-on. It is an integral part of our business. We will continue to apply AI intelligently, securely, and ethically to help customers improve cost efficiency, optimize operations, and strengthen competitive advantage.”
