Mystery Shopper Survey of Financial Enterprise Customer Service Hotlines: Service Still Has Room for Improvement
A 'mystery call' survey released by phone and chat service provider Moneypenny, covering 60 U.S. financial enterprises, shows that although most enterprises performed well in overall customer service, there were inconsistencies in greeting warmth, helpfulness, and call handling quality. Nearly half of the surveyed enterprises defaulted to voicemail, and three even let calls ring until disconnection; about three-quarters of enterprises received only 'poor' ratings for greeting, overall helpfulness, and warmth, with only three earning 'excellent' across all criteria. The fastest average answer time was 1 ring (7.7 seconds), while the slowest averaged 5 rings (35.13 seconds).

Survey Background and Overall Findings
A newly released "mystery caller" survey assessing telephone customer service skills in the financial industry reveals that this sector still has room for improvement in customer service. The survey was conducted by the leading telephone and chat service provider Moneypenny , covering 60 U.S. businesses. Although most surveyed companies provided quality customer service overall, the performance of some financial services firms varied in terms of the warmth of greetings, the helpfulness of customer service representatives, and the quality of handling throughout the call.
Key Data: Voicemail and Rating Performance
Survey data shows that among the financial services companies called, nearly halfdefaulted to transferring calls to voicemail, and even threecompanies let the phone ring until the system hung up. In terms of greetings, overall helpfulness, and warmth, approximatelythree-quartersof the surveyed companies received only a "poor" rating, and only threecompanies received an "outstanding" rating across all evaluation items.
Response Speed Comparison
In terms of call answer speed, the best-performing financial services companies answered calls within an average of 1 ring (7.7 seconds), while the worst-performing companies took an average of 5 rings (35.13 seconds)to answer.
Industry Perspectives
"We were surprised that some companies did not place sufficient importance on customer service when answering calls," said Eric Schurke , CEO of Moneypenny North America. "Customers form lasting impressions of a company through a single phone call, so long delays in answering or a cold phone experience can cause lasting damage to a brand. The difference between answering in one ring versus five or more may sound small, but when customers pick up the phone, they are seeking answers, not frustration."
