Global business leaders are exploring the safest and wisest path to recovery in the post-pandemic era, but one thing is clear: the workplace as we knew it no longer exists. Predictably, people will frequently reference comparisons between 'before' and 'after,' with visible differences everywhere from commuting patterns to office layouts.

However, not all changes are as obvious as six-foot distances between desks or employees wearing masks in conference rooms. The changes that occur quietly—subtle yet widespread shifts in mindsets and perspectives—often play the most powerful role in redefining the post-pandemic business landscape. Now is the time to re-examine what should be the top priority.

In the past, the CFO's primary goal was to meet shareholder demands, provide accurate data, demonstrate profitability, and handle various related matters. But the paradigm has shifted. Today, our success depends on whether executives place employee safety, connection, well-being, and satisfaction at the core.

Supporting this major shift in priorities requires a more nuanced approach to recovery planning. While many organizations have implemented on-site safety measures and requirements, savvy executives see the long-term solution: a company-wide digital transformation.

What was once viewed by many business leaders as idealized modernization, automation, and cutting-edge technology has now rapidly become indispensable. The pandemic has served as a powerful catalyst for change, accelerating automation, transformation, and other new ways of working—whether remote or otherwise—that will help leaders support both employees and shareholders.

Developing an effective, employee-centric digital transformation strategy begins with empathy and authority. You are the primary advocate and decision-maker for your employees. Ask yourself: What tools, processes, and environments will best support remote teams and drive long-term performance?

For example, modern cloud and mobile time-tracking capabilities ensure accessibility, uptime, and security, while facilitating rapid employee adoption and providing real-time visibility into productivity when synchronized with an organization's existing ecosystem.

An agile ecosystem that can evolve without disruption is equally critical in this process. Accurate, consistent metrics around time enable valuable analysis and help businesses manage people, projects, costs, and profits, even in completely unpredictable circumstances.

Creating these favorable conditions requires a flexible, resilient, and centralized solution that replaces manual workflows and eliminates information silos.

Of course, bringing so many remote workers into the workforce will have significant impacts, many of them beneficial and some challenging. Benefits include savings on administrative expenses such as real estate, utilities, and office perks; drawbacks include productivity losses due to feelings of isolation or disconnection.

The question of how we remotely foster collaboration and manage productivity will persist. Of course, even as businesses shift toward a more employee-centric approach, meeting shareholder needs must remain an integral part of the entire process.

But the pros and cons are actually two sides of the same coin: effective management, visibility, productivity, and collaboration can yield unparalleled advantages; inefficient management, on the other hand, can turn these critical levers against themselves.

Business leaders: it's time to focus our energy on employees, who are the drivers of performance and results. Shareholders are not to be abandoned, but we must recognize that in a post-pandemic society, their needs are no longer the supreme guiding principle.

Employees need our support now, and as the workplace continues to evolve, we will increasingly rely on them. Ultimately, new problems require new solutions, and these solutions must withstand the test of adaptability, flexibility, and ease of use.
