CFO PULSE Report: Accounting Talent Shortage Intensifies, AI Adoption Accelerates

Austin, Texas — Personiv (a division of eClerx and a leading provider of finance and accounting outsourcing solutions) released its latest CFO PULSE Report: 2025 Talent Outlook on April 30, 2025. The report reveals that talent shortages in the finance and accounting sector are intensifying significantly: the average number of open positions surged by 150% within a year, and 87% of decision-makers acknowledge a talent shortage, the highest percentage since the survey began in 2020 (when it was 63%).

The report also notes that companies are accelerating their adoption of new technologies to address talent shortages. Although leaders in previous surveys showed hesitation and concern about AI and automation, the latest data shows that nearly 40% of finance and accounting organizations have already realized tangible benefits from these technologies.

"Accounting and finance organizations adopting AI and automation are improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing employees' work-life balance," said Matt Wood, Global Head of Finance and Accounting Outsourcing at Personiv. "These advancements give finance departments a competitive edge in attracting and retaining scarce talent."

  • Awareness of the issue continues to rise: 87% of decision-makers believe there is a talent shortage, with 20% saying the situation is worsening.
  • More finance and accounting leaders are embracing AI and automation: 21% of decision-makers say leveraging new technologies to streamline processes and reduce manual work is their top strategic priority for 2025; only 12% of organizations report not having implemented AI and automation in any form.
