AWS officially launches new generation general-purpose EC2 M8i and M8i-flex instances
AWS announced the general availability of Amazon EC2 general-purpose M8i and M8i-flex instances, powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available exclusively on AWS, with an all-core sustained frequency of 3.9 GHz. Compared to the previous M7i series, the new instances offer up to 15% better price-performance, up to 20% higher performance, 2.5x memory bandwidth, and support up to 384 vCPUs and 1.5 TB of memory.

Today, AWS announced Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) general purpose M8i and M8i-flex instancesare now generally available. These instances are powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available only from AWS, with sustained all-core turbo frequencies up to 3.9 GHz, delivering the highest performance and fastest memory bandwidth among comparable Intel processors in the cloud.
Compared to the previous generation M7i and M7i-flex instances, the new instances offer up to 15% better price performance, up to 20% higher performance, and 2.5x higher memory bandwidth. M8i and M8i-flex instances are suitable for general purpose workloads, including general web application servers, virtual desktops, batch processing, microservices, databases, and enterprise applications.
In terms of specific performance, compared to M7i and M7i-flex instances, the new instances deliver up to 60% higher speed in NGINX web application scenarios, up to 30% higher performance for PostgreSQL database workloads, and up to 40% higher performance for AI deep learning recommendation models.
Consistent with R8i and R8i-flex instances, the M8i series uses sixth-generation AWS Nitro Cards, with network and Amazon Elastic Block Storage (Amazon EBS) bandwidth up to 2x higher than the previous generation, significantly improving network throughput for workloads handling small packets, such as web, application, and game servers. Additionally, the new instances support bandwidth configuration, allowing adjustments in 25% increments between network and Amazon EBS bandwidth to optimize database performance, query processing, and logging speed.
M8i instance specifications
M8i instances offer up to 384 vCPUs and 1.5 TB of memory, and include bare metal instances that provide exclusive access to the underlying physical hardware. This series is SAP-certified and is suitable for scenarios requiring maximum instance sizes or sustained high CPU usage, such as large application servers, databases, game servers, CPU-based inference, and video streaming processing.

M8i-flex instance specifications
M8i-flex instances are a lower-cost variant of M8i, priced 5% lower with 5% better price performance. This series is designed for workloads that need the latest generation performance but do not fully utilize all compute resources, and can achieve full CPU performance 95% of the time.

Users currently using earlier general purpose instances can migrate directly to M8i-flex instances without making any changes to their applications or workloads.
Regions and purchase options for general availability
Amazon EC2 M8i and M8i-flex instances are now generally available in the following AWS Regions: US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Spain).
