Deep Dive:

  • Retailer Beyond announced in a securities filing Thursday that it has appointed Brian LaRose as chief financial officer, with LaRose currently serving as treasurer of The Container Store. According to the filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, LaRose will succeed Adrianne Lee as Beyond's CFO on April 28.
  • Murray, Utah-based Beyond disclosed the CFO change in tandem with announcing its agreement to acquire the storage and organization retailer. Chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis said in a letter to shareholders Thursday that the deal will help "fill a critical gap in our retail and home services strategy." He said, "As we build out the company's platform, any additional assets, including talent, must serve the clear objective of the company's long-term strategy."
  • Lemonis said in the shareholder letter that Beyond also signed agreements to acquire Swedish home organization company Elfa and custom closet and organization products manufacturer Closet Works. He noted that acquiring The Container Store will help complete its omnichannel retail pillar, while the Elfa and Closet Works deals will bolster its home services pillar.

Deep Dive:

LaRose, 53, has served as CFO of The Container Store since March 2025, and previously held treasurer roles at Petco. According to the filing, as the new CFO, LaRose will receive an annual base salary of $700,000 and will be eligible for an annual cash bonus of up to 125% of his base salary. He will also receive a sign-on equity award with a total target value of $2.5 million, vesting over four years.

The CFO change and The Container Store acquisition come about two years after Beyond abandoned its bid to acquire the company following The Container Store's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in December 2024. The storage retailer exited bankruptcy as a private entity in January 2025, cutting $88 million in debt and adding $40 million in financing, as reported at the time by Retail Dive, a sister publication of Industry Dive.

Lemonis noted in Thursday's shareholder letter that Beyond has closely monitored The Container Store's operations since then and has been "disciplined" in structuring the acquisition agreement. According to its SEC filing, Beyond will acquire The Container Store for approximately $150 million in stock and convertible notes.

Lemonis said The Container Store brand will bring more than 100 "prime-location stores" and more than 2.2 million square feet of retail space.

"Right now, these assets are underutilized relative to our expectations," he said. "We see a significant opportunity to better utilize these stores by expanding categories, bringing in more brands, and creating a more comprehensive experience for homeowners."

The Container Store and the other two acquisitions come as the big-box retailer seeks to consolidate operations and reshape its identity after years of financial struggles, leadership changes, and personal tragedy: the company's then-CFO Gustavo Arnal died by suicide in 2022, an event that sparked discussions about the pressures of financial turmoil and executive burnout, as CFO Dive previously reported.

The company subsequently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, after which its intellectual property and the Bed Bath & Beyond brand were acquired by online retailer Overstock.com. According to a company overview, the reorganized entity, which includes Overstock, Bed Bath & Beyond, and buybuyBaby operations, was renamed Bed Bath & Beyond and relisted on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker "BBBY."

Outgoing Beyond CFO Lee will leave the company on April 27, the company said. According to Thursday's press release and filing, she will join beauty retailer Sally Beauty Holdings as CFO on April 28, succeeding Marlo Cormier, who is departing to pursue other opportunities.

Lee has served as Overstock's CFO since 2020, according to a company announcement. According to her LinkedIn profile, she became Beyond's chief financial and administrative officer in 2024 and was promoted to CFO and president in March of last year.

Prior to joining Beyond, she spent six years at car rental company Hertz, holding roles including senior vice president and CFO of North America RAC. Her previous finance positions include Best Buy, Pepsi Americas, and Allianz Life Insurance.

According to the filing, she will receive an annual base salary of $725,000 as Sally Beauty's CFO, along with a $175,000 signing bonus. Additionally, Lee will be eligible for an annual target bonus of 75% of her base salary, a target annual equity grant of $1.3 million beginning in fiscal 2027, and a supplemental equity grant of $1.8 million for fiscal 2026.
