Deep Dive:
According to Gartner's forecast, global IT spending in 2026 willreach $6.15 trillion, up 10.8% from 2025.
Meanwhile, Apptio noted that executives are being asked to justify the value of large-scale AI spending that they often cannot fully see or track. The company's 2026 Technology Investment Management report found that 90% of business leaders viewreturn-on-investment uncertaintyas a challenge affecting technology investment decisions.
As part of Tuesday's announcement, Apptio said it is adding advanced real-time cloud spending visibility capabilities directly within Cloudability, enabling organizations to gain more granular insight into what is driving these costs.
The feature, called "Cloudability Advanced Containers," is powered by technology Apptio obtained through its 2024acquisition of Kubecost, a cost monitoring and management tool for IT teams using Kubernetes software to manage applications in the cloud.
These latest moves build on IBM's broader push into the FinOps space following its$4.6 billion acquisition of Apptioin 2023.
On Tuesday, Apptio also provided updates on Conversational Insights, an AI-powered assistant that allows users to ask questions in natural language to query their technology spending.
The assistant is currently in "preview" with limited availability and is expected to become generally available in 2026. It is designed to "connect financial, operational, and business data across systems to help leaders better manage IT costs, optimize cloud spending, and align strategic portfolios," according to the press release.
A spokesperson said the company delayed the general availability of Conversational Insights based on feedback from preview customers—the product wasoriginally slated for early 2025。
"Customers are excited about Conversational Insights' advanced generative AI capabilities, but remain cautious about bringing AI into financial decision-making systems that manage the world's most sensitive data," the spokesperson said in an email.
"Therefore, we deliberately took the time to build a secure, auditable, and trustworthy AI foundation for financial decisions, and to ensure Conversational Insights meets customer demands for scalable enterprise-grade AI."
