Key Takeaways

  • An FTI Consulting white paper says artificial intelligence is changing expectations for CFOs in their first 100 days.
  • CFOs are increasingly tasked with finance modernization and enterprise transformation, and should assess organizational data and system maturity early to lay the groundwork for digital transformation.
  • The report, released by FTI on July 31, emphasizes that one of the biggest opportunities for new CFOs is improving the speed at which their organizations turn information into action.

Deep Insights

The report comes as demand for AI skills in finance continues to rise. An independent survey released in March by Datarails, a financial software provider, showed that nearly one-third of corporate finance job postings it analyzed explicitly mentioned AI or machine learning capabilities, up from one-quarter a year earlier.

The Datarails report cited examples of companies mentioning AI in finance hiring, including MH Civil Constructors in Amarillo, Texas, which sought a senior CFO to "help the business move into its next phase of growth—leveraging advanced tools, including AI, to drive insights, accuracy, and speed."

FTI Consulting's February "2026 Global CFO Survey" found that 52% of finance leaders now lead or co-lead enterprise-wide transformations, while nearly half (48%) are responsible for AI-enabled initiatives.

"The CFO's role is no longer simply to report on what has happened, but to protect and create value and help shape the future. AI is accelerating this shift," FTI said in the white paper.

The white paper identified several opportunities for new CFOs to create value, including improving forecast accuracy and scenario planning capabilities; accelerating reporting processes through AI and automation to increase visibility into cash, profit, and operational drivers; and aligning the organization around key benchmarks and performance standards.

FTI cautioned against automating for automation's sake. Finance leaders should use technology to help the business move faster and make decisions with greater confidence, such as stress-testing the impact of pricing changes or supply chain disruptions before taking action.

Although new CFOs may face pressure to deliver quick wins, the white paper advises them to balance speed with effectiveness, ensuring that technology investments ultimately lead to better business decisions.

"The CFOs who create the most value in their first 100 days are not necessarily those who modernize finance the fastest, but those who enable their companies to make smarter decisions than they did before they arrived," FTI said.
