McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said on an earnings call that while strong execution, menu changes, and creative marketing in international markets helped second-quarter results meet company expectations, the U.S. business "significantly slowed." Kempczinski noted that U.S. same-store sales growth fell to 0.8% in the second quarter, despite a strong start to the year.

"We don't have a strategic problem," Kempczinski said in the Tuesday call transcript. "We just didn't deliver the level of execution we needed in the second quarter.。”

CFO Ian Borden said the company has been working to simplify restaurant operations and cut certain activities so restaurant teams can focus more.
